PUSH/PULL GUIDE
Pushing: Develops your film for longer to brighten photos. This can increase detail and make colors pop more. However, this can also cause more grain in your photos.
Pulling: Develops your film for less amount of time for a darker, less contrasting image. However, this results in an increase in detail in the shadow areas of your image.
One (+1) 'Stop' equals about double your rated film speed.
When should you push or pull your film?
Push your film when:
- Your shooting environment was too dark for your rated film speed.
- To obtain a higher contrast, grainier aesthetic.
Color shifts are more likely to happen when pushing color film as well as higher saturation.
Pull your film when:
- Your lighting conditions are too bright for your rated film speed.
- You want a flatter, less grainy, but more 'even' toned look.
- Less contrast between the blacks and the whites of your image.
Less common with color film, more common on black and white film.
